The apartment, located on Marquette Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, is reportedly shared by Omar’s adult son, identified by the first name Adnan, and 22 year old Abdulrahman Abdi. It was Abdi, not Omar’s son, who ended up in handcuffs by the time the night was over, but the presence of guns and ammunition inside a home tied to the congresswoman’s family is already generating plenty of scrutiny.
The chain of events began earlier Tuesday with what looked like a routine traffic stop. Minneapolis police pulled Abdi over in the 200 block of 11th Street South and cited him for driving after his license had been canceled and for failing to provide proof of insurance. Officers released him at the scene but had his vehicle impounded, a standard procedure for unlicensed drivers.

Whatever one thinks of the congresswoman’s politics, the underlying public safety questions are worth asking on their own merits.

The congresswoman claimed months ago that her son had been stopped by federal immigration agents, questioned, and then let go. Federal officials, however, have said they possess no record that any such encounter ever took place, leaving her account unverified at best and contradicted by the government at worst.
