Donald Trump has repeatedly described Elon Musk as a patriot, including during Musk’s period working with the Trump administration, while also publicly crediting Musk’s Starlink satellite system with helping disaster-stricken communities in North Carolina.
The two themes came together prominently during a May 30, 2025 Oval Office appearance marking Musk’s departure from his formal government role.
Trump praised Musk’s government work and his business accomplishments during the appearance.
“But Elon is a patriot,” Trump said during remarks honoring Musk.
Trump had used similar language months earlier.
“Elon is, to me, a patriot,” Trump said in February 2025. “You could call him an employee. You could call him a consultant. You could call him whatever you want. But he’s a patriot.”
The praise was originally connected principally to Musk’s work with the administration and the Department of Government Efficiency, rather than being a newly coined description specifically caused by Starlink disaster donations.
Trump nevertheless separately used the May Oval Office event to recall Musk’s assistance following Hurricane Helene.
Helene devastated parts of western North Carolina in September 2024, knocking out power, cellular service and other communications infrastructure.
Starlink terminals became one method of restoring internet connectivity in isolated areas.
Trump recalled being told that residents urgently needed Starlink connections.
“They needed Starlink in North Carolina,” Trump said.
He said he contacted Musk after learning of the need.
Trump said Musk responded by getting Starlink equipment into the region.
“He had so much of it brought over there, and they told me it was unbelievable,” Trump said.
Trump went further in assessing the technology’s effect.
“Starlink, as an example. He saved a lot of lives, probably hundreds of lives, in North Carolina,” Trump said.
That figure represented Trump’s assessment, not an independently established death-prevention count.
There is independent evidence, however, that substantial numbers of Starlink terminals were deployed in disaster-stricken communities.
The Love & Life Foundation, which worked with SpaceX, Medic Corps and volunteers, says “hundreds of Starlink satellite internet systems were deployed in communities where all communication had been lost.”
The organization says hundreds of units can be deployed during the first 24 hours of a natural disaster.
Federal emergency officials also confirmed in 2024 that Starlink terminals were being used during the Hurricane Helene response.
FEMA said Starlink units had been provided to North Carolina and other states to support local governments, search-and-rescue operations and disaster coordination.
That confirmation came during a separate disagreement after Musk accused FEMA and federal officials of obstructing private relief flights.
FEMA and then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg disputed Musk’s claims that authorities were broadly blocking legitimate relief operations.
The dispute does not erase the documented use of Starlink during the response.
Instead, it shows two different aspects of the Helene story: Starlink technology was used to restore communications, while Musk and federal officials publicly disagreed over aspects of the government’s handling of relief access.
Trump later focused heavily on the first part.
“I don’t think he gets credit for what he’s done,” Trump said of Musk while discussing Starlink and other accomplishments.
