Former ABC News correspondent Terry Moran says he tried to report on then-President Joe Biden’s declining health in late 2023 or early 2024, but network leadership shut the effort down. The claim is notable because Moran is no conservative and has been openly critical of President Trump.

Moran made the remarks on The Daily Beast podcast. He said it was clear by late 2023 and early 2024 that Biden was fading quickly. He was describing what he saw in front of him, not a rumor from the political fringe.

Moran said he had traveled with Biden to Japan in the spring of 2023 and thought the president was frail, saying he looked like he could blow away in a stiff wind. That was well over a year before the debate that forced the issue into the open.

Moran said he sent his editors an email pitch for a story on Biden’s health, written as gently and respectfully as he could manage. He said he wanted to follow a subject he believed voters had a right to know about.

“I got shut down very hard,” Moran said. He said leadership told him the president’s health was the medical unit’s business, not his.

Moran stressed he is not a doctor and was not trying to diagnose anyone. He said anyone who has watched a grandparent age knows what fading looks like, and that it was a legitimate concern for American voters. That is the reporter’s job, and it involved no partisan leap.

He also said Biden’s voice had been reduced to a whisper by his final year in office, and Biden is now 83. Those observations line up with what many Americans saw for themselves in 2024.

The debate in June 2024 changed everything. Questions about Biden’s condition intensified after his disastrous performance against Trump that month, and voters had already sat through months of official assurances that nothing was wrong.

Biden later withdrew from the race, and the Democratic Party swapped its nominee. Had the questions been pressed earlier, voters and primary participants might have had a real chance to weigh them.

Reports and books since Biden left office have alleged that aides concealed the extent of his decline. CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’s Alex Thompson wrote “Original Sin,” which draws on more than 200 interviews. Moran’s account adds a new detail: at least one network reporter says he wanted to look into it and was told no.

Some mainstream outlets have faced criticism over how they covered questions about Biden’s mental acuity. Moran’s story feeds the argument that the failure was one of editorial judgment and not simply of access.

Fox News Digital asked ABC News for comment and had not received a response. Until ABC explains who decided what and why, Moran’s account stands largely unanswered.

Moran is also not a favorite of ABC’s leadership. He left the network after a social media post attacking Trump and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, whom he called “world-class haters.” ABC said the post violated its policies and that it would not renew his agreement.

Moran has separately claimed that ABC overhauled his COVID lab-leak report after he sent a copy to Dr. Anthony Fauci. Two accounts of editorial interference on politically sensitive stories make a pattern that ABC should address.
