Mamdani’s Handpicked Candidate Gets Arrested — How Did It Get There?

An ultra-left congressional candidate backed by socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani just got hauled away in handcuffs in the middle of Manhattan, and instead of showing an ounce of remorse, she is bragging about it.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic Socialists of America-backed nominee running for New York’s 13th Congressional District, was arrested Thursday afternoon after she and dozens of other far-left activists sat down in the middle of a Manhattan street and refused to move. She was taken into custody during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the United Nations General Assembly.

This was no spontaneous outburst of emotion. Reporting on the demonstration indicated Avila Chevalier had committed in advance to refusing police dispersal orders, making the arrest a deliberate act rather than an incidental one. In other words, this soon-to-be member of Congress planned her own arrest as a campaign moment.

The scene outside the United Nations was chaotic. Activists sat in the street blocking traffic as taxis and diplomatic vehicles backed up and honked their horns, and police said more than one hundred people were taken into custody.

Avila Chevalier was not alone in her radical company that day. She joined City Councilmember Chi Ossé, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher, and Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the DSA’s New York City chapter, along with dozens of other protesters carrying banners accusing Israel of genocide. Actress Susan Sarandon and former Army intelligence leaker Chelsea Manning were also reportedly present.

The rhetoric coming from Avila Chevalier was every bit as extreme as her actions. She accused the democratically elected leader of Israel, a close American ally, of being a war criminal who should not be allowed to walk freely through New York City streets.

Police were not fooled by the political theater. The Mamdani-backed candidate was formally charged with disorderly conduct, according to the NYPD.

Once the cameras were rolling, her campaign tried to rewrite the story entirely, framing the arrest as one for peacefully protesting Netanyahu rather than for what it actually was: blocking a public road.

This is a pattern with the radical left. Break the law, get arrested, then spin it into a martyrdom narrative for donors and headlines. Her campaign put out a statement within hours, turning the arrest into a badge of honor rather than a lawless act that inconvenienced ordinary New Yorkers trying to get through their day.

So who exactly is this rising star of the socialist left? Avila Chevalier is no moderate. Coverage of the race has noted that she has called to abolish the police, disparaged the American flag, refused to condemn Hamas’s October 7 terrorist attack on Israel, and does not support any form of deportation.

Her path to the nomination was already controversial. Avila Chevalier beat five-term Democrat incumbent Adriano Espaillat in the primary after criticizing what she characterized as his insufficient efforts for working-class residents of the district.

The margin of victory was razor thin, a fact her supporters conveniently leave out when celebrating her as some kind of unstoppable movement candidate. She defeated Espaillat by roughly three percentage points, winning 49.4 percent of the vote to his 46 percent.

Turnout tells the real story here. Just seven percent of active voters in the district actually supported Mamdani’s ally Avila Chevalier over the establishment Democrat incumbent.

She did not win because New Yorkers overwhelmingly embraced socialism. She won a low-turnout primary in one of the most reliably Democratic districts in the entire country, which explains exactly why this arrest will not cost her the race in November.

New York’s 13th Congressional District is not competitive in any meaningful sense. Its Cook Partisan Voting Index sits at a staggering D plus 43, making it one of the most one-sided districts in the entire nation. Barack Obama carried the district 93 percent to 6 percent in 2012, and Hillary Clinton won it 92 percent to 5 percent in 2016.

Even the incumbent she defeated in the primary cruised to victory in the general election with almost no Republican opposition, winning his last general election with 83.5 percent of the vote. Numbers like these explain exactly why a candidate can get arrested for blocking traffic and openly refuse to condemn a terrorist attack and still walk into Congress in January without breaking a sweat.

This is the reality of one-party rule in deep blue districts across America. There is no real accountability mechanism left when a district is drawn so heavily in favor of one party that a general election is a formality rather than a contest.

Meanwhile, Mamdani’s fingerprints are all over this entire episode. The mayor personally endorsed Avila Chevalier on national television, praising her as the daughter of a single mother case worker who has fought for working people.
