A targeted ICE operation in New York City turned violent Thursday when a Dominican national with a prior grand larceny conviction attempted to drive away as federal immigration agents approached his vehicle, prompting an officer to open fire.
The confrontation unfolded in Marble Hill, where federal authorities were attempting to arrest 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, who also has alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang.
According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Belgal was pulling into a parking space when plainclothes federal officers approached his vehicle. As the officers moved in, Belgal began driving forward, creating a potentially dangerous confrontation at close range.
An ICE officer responded by firing seven rounds, striking Belgal below his left ear. Belgal survived the shooting.
The incident raises serious questions about the risks federal immigration officers face when suspects attempt to flee in vehicles. A moving automobile can present a deadly threat when officers are positioned directly in its path, although investigators have not yet established the vehicle’s precise direction relative to the agents in this case.
The Department of Homeland Security defended the targeted enforcement operation and criticized sanctuary policies that it says force officers to conduct potentially dangerous arrests in public settings.
