Rapper Nicki Minaj flew with President Donald Trump aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Oct. 25, to a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, and the White House’s top communications official quickly floated her for a new job. “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung wrote on X, alongside a video of a mock job interview with Minaj filmed aboard the plane.
In the roughly two-minute clip, Cheung asked Minaj why the economy is growing. “We have a president that understands economics, first of all,” she answered. “He’s worked his way out of not having a dollar left in the bank.” Asked whether anyone works harder than Trump, Minaj said, “Absolutely not,” adding, “He wakes up at four o’clock in the morning, he outworks people who are half his age, so that tells me that he’s a great guy.”
Details & Background
The official White House account responded to Cheung’s post with an eyes emoji, and Minaj reposted it with an American flag and a smiling emoji, according to Conservative Brief and TheWrap. Neither the White House nor Minaj has announced that she is actually under consideration for the job, and coverage of the post has treated it as a joke. A staffer can be heard at the end of the video introducing Cheung to Minaj, TheWrap reported. Minaj also posted her own video revealing she was aboard Air Force One ahead of the rally.
The quip landed days after Katie Zacharia’s tenure as press secretary ended after just five days. Karoline Leavitt left the role in August. Minaj has been an outspoken Trump supporter this year and appeared with the president in January at the Trump Accounts Summit at the Treasury Department, where she praised the program’s investment accounts for children. Conservative Brief noted that she had criticized Trump-era immigration policies years ago, citing her own childhood immigration from Trinidad and Tobago. In the mock interview, Cheung also asked about foreign policy, the campaign schedule and polling, and Minaj brushed off polls unfavorable to Republicans by pointing to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 loss, according to Conservative Brief.
Reactions
At the rally, Trump invited Minaj onstage, where she pledged her continued support. “President Trump, it is an honor to stand with you every single time,” Minaj said, according to Fox News. “And I will continue to support you forever and ever. If you run again, I will support you again.” The 22nd Amendment bars Trump from seeking a third term. The official Team Trump account posted that the “Queen of Rap” led a chant for Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers and gubernatorial candidate John James.
Supporters online celebrated the moment. Radio host Alec Lace posted, “JUST IN: Nicki Minaj takes the stage with Trump in Michigan and the place erupts!” The Port Huron rally was part of a final-week push in Michigan, where Rogers faces Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in one of the closest Senate races in the country. Former President Barack Obama campaigned for El-Sayed in Detroit on Saturday.
Why This Matters to You
Celebrity endorsements rarely decide elections on their own, but they can reach voters who do not follow politics closely, including younger voters and the Black voters both campaigns are courting in Michigan. Minaj’s visible support gives Republicans a messenger with an audience far beyond the usual cable news crowd.
The episode also highlights the White House’s search for a new press secretary after a turbulent month at the podium. Whoever ultimately takes the job will speak for the administration through the midterms and beyond. With eight days until Election Day, Republicans are counting on star power and turnout in Michigan to help keep the Senate in GOP hands.
