President Donald Trump’s administration has granted U.S. visas to Brazilian politician Flávio Bolsonaro and members of his family after the defeated presidential candidate left Brazil amid an escalating legal dispute with authorities in his home country.
The development follows Bolsonaro’s defeat in Brazil’s October 25 presidential runoff election against incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro, reportedly traveled to the United States on October 27 with his wife, Fernanda, and their two daughters.
His departure occurred after Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the seizure of his passports.
The court action formed part of an ongoing investigation involving allegations of financial misconduct.
According to reporting by Brazil’s Folha de S.Paulo and The Washington Post, American officials were aware of Bolsonaro’s arrival and had approved visas allowing him and his family to remain in the United States.
A senior State Department official confirmed that the family had been granted U.S. visas.
The development quickly attracted attention because of the longstanding political relationship between Trump and the Bolsonaro family.
Jair Bolsonaro served as Brazil’s president from 2019 until the beginning of 2023 and maintained a close political relationship with Trump during their overlapping terms.
Both leaders emphasized national sovereignty, border controls, economic policy, and a willingness to confront established political institutions.
Their relationship continued to attract attention after both left office and faced separate political and legal controversies.
Flávio Bolsonaro subsequently emerged as a major political figure within Brazil’s conservative movement.
A longtime politician who served in the Brazilian Senate, he became a central figure in efforts to return the Bolsonaro family’s political movement to national leadership.
His presidential campaign culminated in the October 25 runoff against Lula.
Following the election result, Brazilian authorities moved to secure Bolsonaro’s passports as investigators examined financial allegations involving his activities and associates.
The Federal Police cited concerns that he might leave Brazil while legal proceedings remained active.
According to reports, the Brazilian authorities canceled his Brazilian passport, although he also possessed an Italian passport.
Bolsonaro nevertheless traveled to the United States shortly after the election.
People familiar with the family’s movements said he arrived with his wife and daughters on October 27.
The Washington Post subsequently reported that a senior U.S. official confirmed that the family had received American visas.
Folha de S.Paulo also reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio played an active role in facilitating arrangements, according to individuals familiar with the matter.
The details of Rubio’s reported involvement have not been fully disclosed publicly.
Some Bolsonaro allies described the development as a move toward political asylum.
