Democrats Seize Congress in Midterm Blue Wave as Texas Flips for Talarico and Hinojosa

Democrats recaptured majorities in both the House and the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, riding a blue wave that reached deep into Texas, according to Fox News. Democrat James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton for the Texas Senate seat, and Democrat Gina Hinojosa unseated Gov. Greg Abbott, according to the Fox News Decision Desk. Talarico is the first Democrat to win a Senate race in Texas since 1988, according to Newsweek.

The losses extended across the map. Democrats flipped Republican-held Senate seats in Maine, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina, and they held open seats in Michigan and New Hampshire, Fox News reported. In the House, Democrats cleared the 218 seats needed for a majority. As of early Wednesday, the Mississippi Senate race between Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Scott Colom appeared deadlocked, while Sen. Dan Sullivan held a slight edge over former Rep. Mary Peltola in Alaska.

    Details & Background

Republicans entered Election Day holding a 53-47 Senate majority and a 218-214 House majority. Polls had shown Democrats favored to win the House, but the Senate was widely seen as a tossup. The night turned quickly. Former Gov. Roy Cooper flipped North Carolina early in the evening, and Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina, a state President Donald Trump won by 18 points, according to Newsweek. Democrats also took the governorships of Ohio, Iowa and Georgia, according to CBS News.

Voters pointed to the economy and the war with Iran. Exit polls showed Trump’s approval rating at 38%, possibly a record low for a president in a midterm, according to CBS News. Roughly 60% of voters blamed Trump for high prices, according to an exit poll cited by Breitbart News. There were bright spots for Republicans. Rep. Byron Donalds won the Florida governor’s race, becoming the state’s first Black governor, and Sen. Ashley Moody held her Florida Senate seat, according to CBS News. Sen. Marsha Blackburn became the first woman elected governor of Tennessee, Breitbart reported.

    Reactions

Trump distanced himself from the results. “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote on social media. He later struck a more conciliatory tone on Fox News. “I think the Democrats did a good job,” Trump said. “I can work with them on many things.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is in line to become majority leader, celebrated. “The American people reduced the red brick wall to a pile of bricks,” Schumer said. “Relief is on the way.”

Democrats wasted no time signaling plans for investigations. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., posted one word on X: “Subpoenas.” Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, wrote, “LAWYER UP.” Some on the right turned their fire on their own party. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., said the outcome was about “holding Republicans accountable for betraying their promises.” Conservative commentator Matt Walsh wrote, “The Iran War is the greatest political blunder in the last two decades at least,” and said, “The Republican Party needs all new leadership.”

    Why This Matters to You

Starting in January, Democrats will control what bills reach the president’s desk, which nominees are confirmed and which officials are hauled before Congress. That puts President Trump’s judicial picks, border enforcement funding and tax policies at the mercy of a Democratic Congress. Trump has already said he will use his veto, and Republicans no longer have the votes to move their own agenda through either chamber. The next two years will be defined by subpoenas, standoffs and vetoes.

The loss of Texas is the clearest warning sign. A state that has been the backbone of the Republican map for more than three decades now has a Democratic senator-elect and a Democratic governor-elect. If Republicans cannot hold Texas, every state on the map is in play for 2028. How the party responds in the coming weeks, whether it rallies behind the president or splits over the blame, will decide whether this election was a one-time rebuke or the start of a lasting realignment.
