Breaking
President Donald Trump on Thursday, Oct. 22, called for Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., to resign from Congress, a day after federal prosecutors referred to her in a court filing as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress.” He added that “because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress.”
Trump carried the message to a campaign rally in Sioux City, Iowa, that night. “It’s not looking good,” he told the crowd, according to the New York Post. “I mean, I don’t know: If you get sworn in with a false name, I would imagine that’s pretty tough to remain.” Omar has not been charged with any crime, and she has denied wrongdoing.
Details & Background
The filing, submitted Wednesday, Oct. 21, by the office of U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro in Washington, sought more time to respond to news organizations asking to unseal records tied to the search warrant for Omar’s home, according to The Epoch Times. Homeland Security Investigations agents searched that home on Oct. 12 as part of a criminal investigation into possible immigration fraud, seizing her phone, computers, passport and other documents, according to Arab News. The filing itself does not establish that Omar used a fraudulent identity.
The name in the filing matters because of a long-running allegation. Omar legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, and critics have claimed for years that he is her brother and that the marriage was meant to obtain immigration benefits. Omar has denied it. Investigators are also examining how Omar obtained citizenship and whether she or her late father misrepresented her age on immigration documents. Omar says she became a citizen at 17 through her father, who was naturalized in 2000.
Reactions
Trump also returned to Omar’s interview this week with MS NOW host Chris Hayes, in which she answered “Not to my knowledge” when asked whether she was related to her ex-husband. Trump called it “one of the worst answers I think I’ve ever heard.” “I’m pretty good at watching that stuff, and she’s been a scammer for a long time,” he said. In his post, he asked that House Speaker Mike Johnson be informed and claimed that “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to FRAUD.” Omar has made no such admission and denies any wrongdoing.
Omar’s spokesperson told Fox News Digital, “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name.” Democratic leaders have defended her since the search. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the administration’s “violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress.” White House border czar Tom Homan has taken the opposite view, saying, “Of course, if you lie during the naturalization process, there is a process to denaturalize somebody.”
Why This Matters to You
Every member of Congress swears an oath to support the Constitution, and the Constitution requires House members to have been U.S. citizens for at least seven years. If a lawmaker obtained citizenship through false statements, the government can ask a court to revoke it, and that could ultimately call her seat into question. That is why the name on a single court filing has become a national story.
At the same time, a filing is not a verdict. Prosecutors have not charged Omar, and no court has found fraud. But with the midterms less than two weeks away and Omar seeking a fifth term, the president’s demand puts pressure on Democratic leaders to answer a simple question: what exactly do federal records say about who Ilhan Omar is? Voters in Minnesota and across the country deserve a clear answer.
